Miami Beach, FL - January 12, 2010 ---
David Bromstad, winner of HGTV’s first “Design Star” reality show
four years ago and the host of the hit
show “Color Splash” will
be moving to Miami. HGTV
is also currently casting “fun, energetic homeowners” to be part of
the seventh season.
HGTV has announced Color Splash: Miami will premiere
on Sunday, June 13 at 11PM ET/PT. Following its debut, Color
Splash: Miami will move to its regular Saturdays at 10PM ET/PT
timeslot on June 19.
David is
back home in Miami and I caught up with him to find out what we
should expect from the forthcoming season.
SOBEGAYINFO.COM - Your show has taped in the
San Francisco area for the last three seasons.
Why are you bringing it to Miami and what challenges does
South Florida present to a designer that you didn’t face on the west
coast?
David - There are several reasons why we are
bringing Color Splash to Miami. The first reason is this is where I
live. I lived here while I was filming in SF traveling back and
forth almost every weekend. It was definitely an adventure! The
other reason I wanted Color Splash to move to Miami is that the city
is absolutely inspiring; from the old and new architecture, to the
mass amount of artisans and craftsmen, and of course the undeniable
weather and overwhelming sexiness. Miami is unique with its
international influences, especially from South America. This
makes it the only city of its kind in America. I call it the
American Riviera.
SOBEGAYINFO.COM - Over the last three years,
has there been a project you’ve completed that you later just said -
“Oh my God, why did I do that?”
And also, has there been something that you did that you were
extremely proud of and said “I can’t believe I did that!”
David - Honestly, I have never done anything I
wasn't proud to show my homeowners or my fans. If anything, I am
known to push my team to the next level on almost every aspect.
I have been so lucky to have worked with a most amazing team, I
think after every makeover we all would all say..."I can’t believe
we pulled that off in the time frame we had."
SOBEGAYINFO.COM - From a design standpoint, how
do you see your designs being different in the South Florida area
than they were on the west coast?
David - Design in South Florida will absolutely
be different. Because Miami has a very specific look of being
clean, sleek and sexy my homeowners will definitely want that
brought into their homes. Homeowners in San Francisco have a different
aesthetic, more of a comfortable, contemporary and traditional feel.
The designs in Miami will push the boundaries of design, and I
couldn’t be more thrilled to do so!
SOBEGAYINFO.COM - Your show is only thirty
minutes long. For a
30-minute episode, how long does it take to actually complete one of
your projects?
David - We have only two 10-hour days to
complete the actual makeover. We have half a day to meet with the
homeowners, and one day for the sketching and shopping segments for
a total of 3.5 days of filming. Prep time can be as little as 4
days to as much as 12 weeks depending on when we see the spaces.
SOBEGAYINFO.COM - I’ve known you
for a while and I must say that with so much success, you have
remained very grounded and are just as nice today as you were the
first time we met right before you did Design Star.
How have you stayed so grounded and dealt with the success?
David - To me I'm just a regular guy who has a
really cool job. I never intended on being in the public eye,
therefore I never craved the attention. Now that I’m getting it, I
can’t complain. I think I am the luckiest guy in the world to be
blessed with what God has given me. I owe my parents and family
everything. They taught me honest values that transcend fame.
SOBEGAYINFO.COM -
You’ve
used your celebrity status to help many charities.
What has been your favorite event or benefit you’ve been able
to do so far?
David -
I really like to help out any charities that help out the gay
community and HIV/AIDS. Going to the GLAAD awards in San Francisco
and presenting was one of the best memories ever.
SOBEGAYINFO.COM -
What would your dream home look
like? Modern,
contemporary, eclectic, traditional?
What style is David?
Do you like bold colors or do you like a neutral base with
pops of color?
David - Asking me what my dream home would be is like
asking me my favorite color, impossible to decide! I would love a
house on the bay or ocean here in the Miami Beach/Miami area.
Nothing too over the top, but enough space to create and design
unexpected elements for myself.
I’m obsessed with eclectic design, the combination of modern,
baroque, traditional, Asian, mid-century, etc. turns me on like no
other. To me it’s like porn, seeing a combination of styles
combined into a space.
I love color, but I prefer white or grey walls and pops
of color in the furniture, artwork, and accessories. Right now my
home has white and gray walls with pops of acid yellow, lime green
and red.
SOBEGAYINFO.COM - Back to your show; what makes
someone a good candidate for a David Bromstad makeover?
David - The best candidate for a Bromstad
makeover is someone with a fantastic personality and, of course, a
room that's really ugly (Laughing). Having a homeowner willing to
take chances and go beyond their comfort zone in design is key.
SOBEGAYINFO.COM - Is there anything
else we can look forward to that you would like to share about
“Color Splash” Miami?
David - Color Splash in Miami is going to be a
very different show; a whole new cast. New city. New and exciting
experiences. I really want to feature local artisans and craftsmen
here in the Miami area. The talent here is so beyond anywhere else
I have ever been, and I want to show America how fabulous Miami is.
I am also going to show everyone that I’m not just a designer and
painter, but I also build sculptures and create art and
architectural installations myself. Watch out Miami here I come!
It should be a fabulous adventure!
Welcome home David and much luck and success with
your new season.
