Miami Beach FL - June 12, 2009 ---The City of
Miami Commissioners today followed Miami Beach, North
Miami and
Miami-Dade County in adopting a domestic partner ordinance. In a 5 to 0 vote, the city of Miami became the third
municipality in Miami-Dade to grant benefits such as health insurance to domestic partners of city employees.
The new ordinance will also allow the City of
Miami to offer health benefits to the children of domestic partners
in the same manner as the city offers such benefits to spouses and
children of heterosexual employees.
To celebrate the passage of the ordinance, SAVE
Dade held an event at the Clevelander South Beach and also
celebrated national victories in equal rights for the GLBT
community.“SAVE Dade:
Ride The Wave of Pride” had special guest, Khloe Kardashian on hand
with a Khloe Kardashian Drag Queen Look-a-Like contest while filming the
final episode of her new reality series “Kourtney & Khloe Take
Miami”.
CBS4 Miami meteorologist David Bernard, Edison
Farrow, and Kourtney Kardashian were on hand to judge the contest. Local celebrity, Elaine Lancaster hosted the event as
Superstar DJ Tracy Young provided the beats. In the end, Poison Ivy
was the victor of the contest and won the $1000 prize.
The event was also held to gather support and awareness as SAVE Dade prepares to launch an anti-discrimination campaign with the goal of facilitating the passage of a Civil Rights Bill in Florida, possibly overturning Amendment 2 passed in November of 2008 which bans gay
marriage and domestic partnerships. As a fundraiser, the Clevelander donated a portion of the profits from drink sales to SAVE Dade and at the end a $5000 check was presented to SAVE Dade.
If the local ordinances are challenged, Amendment 2’s state-wide jurisdiction could negate the progress made in civil rights for many of Florida’s residents, regardless if they are gay or straight. Heterosexual couples in a domestic partnership could have their rights taken away if any of these local domestic partner ordinances are challenged and found to violate Amendment 2. But on this day, it is a celebration of progress in a country that seems bent on maintaining the status quo. SOBEGAYINFO.COM would like to thank the City of Miami for their overwhelming support, Kourtney and Khloe Kardashian for their love and advocacy, and everyone who attended and made this such a wonderful evening.
