Miami Beach, FL – August 12, 2010 ---
Vizcaya Museum and Gardens has played
backdrop to one of the most
renowned HIV/AIDS fundraisers in the world, The White Party,
produced by Care Resource for the last 25 years.
The 2010 White Party will be the last held at Vizcaya due to
extremely high costs and limited access to the property according to
Care Resource.
Commenting to the Miami Herald, Wade Patterson,
director of finance and resource development for Care Resource said
that the rental fees for Vizcaya neared $50,000.
Care Resource, a non-profit that helps HIV-positive people
receive health care, feels that it has become a fundraiser for
Vizcaya instead of them and has decided to change the location for
next year.
The complaint regarding access to the property
lies rooted in the Vizcaya rules that prevent party organizers from
entering the property to set up lighting, stages and food areas
until three hours before the event;
a daunting task for any size party and party organizer.
In his comments made to the Herald, Joel M.
Hoffman, executive director of Vizcaya,
says they’ve increased their
efforts to reduce the wear and tear on the Renaissance-styled villa
and museum. In that
effort, they’ve raised rental fees each year over the past 10 years.
Hoffman also told the Miami Herald that the pricey fee for
early set-ups was to “discourage complicated events”.
The Miami Herald reported that the current base rate for a
private evening event at Vizcaya is $12,750, which includes 125
guests. An extra fee of
$25 per person is charged for groups larger than that.
One wonders however if Vizcaya is pricing themselves out of
the market and if so, will they be able to continue funding the
museum without events such as White Party.
Patterson told the Herald that a change in the
2011 location may help revitalize the event.
In a quote given to the Herald, Patterson says “…28 years
into this disease, it’s also time to rethink how to reach out to a
younger generation of people who have been impacted by AIDS”.
Care Resource is a non-profit, multi-cultural,
community based AIDS service organization rooted from the 1998
merger of the Health Crisis Network and Community Research
Initiative. Care
Resource is now South Florida’s oldest and largest HIV/AIDS service
organization serving people in both Miami-Dade and Broward Counties.
Care Resource provides services such as medical care,
clinical trials and research studies, information and referrals,
case management, mental health, a food bank, home delivered meals,
and counseling and testing.
White Party Weekend 2010 runs from November 24
through November 29 during the U.S.A. Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
