Miami Beach, FL, January 29, 2008 --- Launched in the early '90s as a one-time charity event to fight The American Family Association, an extension of Anita Bryant's anti-gay crusade, Winter Party Festival has evolved into a six-day festival benefiting the GLBT community of Miami-Dade County. Thousands of guests from all over the world will attend the events in South Beach, Miami, and Ft. Lauderdale.
The pinnacle of the Festival is the historic Beach Party. Beginning at noon on Sunday, March 2nd, more than 5,500 guests will flock to the 12th Street Beach and dance the day away to the music of DJ Joe Gauthreaux. The Beach Party is the anchoring attraction to the six-day festival. Last year's pool and beach parties were voted the best by Edge Publications. National Geographic even recognizes Winter Party Festival as one of the best annual festivals in Miami.
The Festival, which benefits the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, is very important for the South Florida GLBT community as well as the national GLBT community. The Festival and its sister event, the Miami Recognition Dinner, both have raised over $1.6 million for organizations serving the South Florida LGBT community.
The events this year include performances by Mark Angelo Cummings, Sandy Collins, Topaz, and Boom Boom. The parties will have superstar DJs Phil B., Randy Bettis, Alyson Calagna, Greg Drescher, Joe Gauthreaux, DJ Harmonix, Brett Henrichsen, David Knap, Manny Lehman, Tony Moran, Oren Nizri, DJ Pride, Peter Rauhofer, Rosabel, and DJ Sayho.
Along with the stellar parties, Winter Party Festival will also include many cultural events and other activities such as Hollywood Nights for GLBTQ youth and their allies, a GLBT Family Picnic, Gay American Heroes Memorial and "Days Without Sunshine": Anita Bryant's Anti-Gay Crusade Exhibit. Other events include a shopping spree at Sephora and the Friday night favorite Winter Party Runway fashion show, this year sponsored by hot underwear and swimwear designer aussieBum.
The Winter Party Festival celebrates its 15th anniversary this year. The event continues to have the staying power and attraction that it's always had. When the rest of the United States and Europe are battling the winter doldrums and harsh, cold weather, Miami Beach and the Festival combine to offer an escape no other GLBT festival can -- famous, beautiful beaches, turquoise waters, and all the comforts of a warm vacation wrapped up with the greatest party weekend in the country, if not the world.
The Winter Party Festival Committee began planning this year's event in May, 2007. With more than forty dedicated and motivated members of the volunteer planning committee, it proves that Winter Party Festival could not happen without the efforts of gracious volunteers. Each volunteer on the committee has special expertise or knowledge that, when teamed together, makes the Winter Party Festival what it is today. Even with the nearly all-volunteer planning committee, the weekend could not happen without the hundreds of individual event volunteers. Look for the volunteers wearing special event t-shirts as they greet the Festival attendees with a warm smile and friendly greeting. Volunteers are still being accepted so go to the Winter Party website and sign up.
Why should you support The Winter Party Festival? Since the beginning, Winter Party Festival has provided vital funding for organizations serving the South Florida LGBT community. When the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force took over the Festival and the Miami Recognition Dinner, it committed to returning two-thirds of the net proceeds of these events to local service organizations through a grant-making process administered by the Dade Community Foundation. Additionally, since the Task Force took responsibility for Winter Party, more money than ever has made its way back to the local community in the form of grants.
Whether you go to one of the many parties, a cultural event, or just make a donation, you are helping the South Florida LGBT community in so many ways.
